Rebecca, thanks for the tip about reading The House at Pooh Corner aloud. My daugter is 26 months and I tried it out today. Read the first chapter of THaPC while she played. She ran over periodically and looked at the book, thankfully just as I turned a page to pictures. I think she enjoyed it. We’ll see.

I read Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird, and though I know you said you didn’t mean to plagarize, you did use a lot of the same ideas, but otherwise it was great. I think that maybe you should have changed it from three minds to many minds.

Not sure how I came across this – must have mutual writing buddies – but it pulled me in straight away and although my brain kept saying – it’s a story – I was really sad for her and wanted to kill Dred-I was onto him with the sofa stuffing pulling and the ‘There’s one problem’ remark!

I have read one James Patterson novel. He’s a very successful and very commercial writer. There are so many different types of fiction, I don’t think that you have to be limited to commercial work. There is literary fiction, romance, sci-fi and fantasy – and those are just the classifications that the bookstores and publishing houses use. Fiction is hard though, and finding a proper style and voice is probably the biggest challenge. If you don’t like fiction, then write other stuff. I think literary fiction does quite well (hello, Oprah!). But I don’t think you should limit your fiction options to commercial only since there is much more out there.

This is wonderful! I have a soft spot for poetry that speaks to reading and writing. My favorite stanza is II:

“I was of three minds:
Each book
Only partly begun.”

That’s just plain awesome.

ALotus, I know it’s all about practice. My writing has been overshadowed with life so I’ve been pretty quiet around here. Thanks for the visit and your thoughts.

That’s an impressive number of haiku/senryu! I’ll go take a look. I’m not on twitter so I can’t comment. I really do like to read poetry, but I don’t often have much to say about it and I certainly am not comfortable writing it!

I know, back to the practicing!
